Guideline for IAEJ authors


The International Agricultural Engineering Journal publishes original papers only and submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that the material is original and that no similar paper has been or is being submitted elsewhere. The major technical categories that the journal covers include, but are not limited to: farm power and advanced agricultural machines; soil, water and environmental engineering; bioprocess and food engineering. The journal receives three types of papers: research papers, research notes and review papers.
Submission: Manuscripts must be written in English on A4 size paper (210 mm × 297 mm) in single-spacing with 2.5 cm margin at all sides. It must be complete with all figures, diagrams, drawings, photographs, and tables inserted in the text. The length of the manuscript should not exceed 6000 words or 12 printed pages inclusive of figures and tables. The electronic file should be in Microsoft Word document and sent by email to www.iaej.org.cn or iaejeditor@yahoo.com.
1 Manuscript Style & Format
It is highly recommended that authors review several papers published in IAEJ to become familiar with the style and format. The English composition quality must be acceptable for publication in a quality international journal. If the English quality is unacceptable, manuscripts will be returned to the authors. These guidelines for authors must be followed precisely and rigidly. Failure to do so will result in manuscripts being returned to authors and consequent delay of the peer review process.
1.1 Headings
The title of the paper should be concise and explicit. All titles, section headings, table headings and figure captions should have an initial capital letter for the first word of each expression only, while all other words, with the exception of proper names, should be in lower case letters throughout. There should be no period at the end of any title, footnote, heading, or caption, unless the last word is an abbreviation of which the stop is part. To show the hierarchical order of section headings, these should be numbered on the decimal system, e.g. 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 etc. First level subsections should be in Times New Roman size 12 bolded font from the left side, e.g., “1 Introduction”; second level subsections should be in Times New Roman size 10.5 bolded font from the left side, e.g., “1.1 Introduction”; third level subsections should be in Times New Roman size 10.5 and non-bolded font from the left side, e.g., “1.1.1  Introduction”.
1.2 Authors and affiliations
Provide the first names or initials (if used), middle names or initials (if used), surnames, and affiliations, including department, university or organization, city, state/province and country for all authors. One of the authors should be designated as the corresponding author, whose email address, telephone and fax numbers should also be provided.
1.3 Abstract
Each paper must have an abstract, not exceeding 300 words, between the title and the beginning of the paper. The abstract should state briefly the purpose of the research, the principal results and major conclusions.
1.4 Keywords
A short list of keywords or phrases should be included immediately after the abstract. In general, 3-6 keywords are recommended.
1.5 Introduction
The introduction should include a brief statement of why the research was conducted. The problem, present objectives, including a description of the subject, scope, and purpose along with a plan of development of the subject matter should also be included.
1.6 Materials and methods
This section should explain clearly how the study is conducted and include a description of the study site if it is a field study, the experimental or sampling design, the protocol for collecting data and how the data were analyzed. Provide sufficient quantitative details about the experimental protocol so that other scientists could reproduce the experiments.
1.7 Results and discussion
This section describes the solution to the problem stated in the introduction section. Use figures and tables to visually supplement the presentation of the results. The text must refer explicitly to all visuals, and visual elements must be interpreted to emphasize the evidence on which the conclusions are based. The results should provide details of all of the experiments that are required to support the conclusions of the paper. The results section should be written in past tense. The discussion should present the major results and interpretations of the work including some explanation on the significance of these conclusions.
1.8 Conclusions
Conclusions serve as the review of the main results. Suggestions for future research may also be included in this section. Data or statements cited in the conclusion must have been stated previously in the article. Do not introduce new information in the conclusion.
1.9 Acknowledgements
Collate acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article before the references. List here the major donors and those individuals who provided help during the research.
1.10 References
At the end of the text, there should be a section headed “References”. The full references should be quoted in alphabetical order using the first author’s surname with Arabic numbers in square brackets before each reference. Each reference includes the names of all the authors, year, the title in the original language (and translation, where available), source, volume, issue number (in parentheses) and page numbers, in that order. Ensure that every reference cited in the text is also present in the reference list (and vice versa). Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the reference list, but may be mentioned in the text. References should be arranged first alphabetically and then further sorted chronologically if necessary. More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters “a”, “b”, “c”, etc., placed after the year of publication.

2 Style Conventions
Some grammatical rules: third person is the normal standard, avoid first person. Past tense should be used except when referring to the manuscript itself, e.g., referring to figures or tables.  Keep sentences concise and avoid run-on sentences.
2.1 Units, Symbols and Abbreviations
Systeme Internationale (SI) units must be used. Units in the table headings, legends to illustrations, etc., should follow the expression after a comma, e.g. Max. output, kW. Use a space between the number and the unit, like “5 g”, except for percentages and degrees, like “35%”, “21℃”. In choosing symbols, make sure that the same symbol is given not more than one meaning in the text. Both symbols and abbreviations must be defined at their first use in the text and used consistently.
2.2 Illustrations
Illustrations, whether line drawings, graphs or photographs, are given a figure number (e.g. Figure 1) in the same sequence and in ascending numerical order. Figures should be complete with all descriptive legends and captions. In general, it is not permissible to give the same information in the form of a photograph and a drawing or in both graphic and tabular form.
2.3 Tables
Tables should not be provided in a graphic format. Tables are numbered by Arabic numerals in ascending numerical order. Use horizontal rules to separate elements within a table. Author may place additional rules under subheads or under heads that span two or more columns, and blank columns may need to be inserted to achieve this.  Caption fonts for each table should be bolded, e.g. “Table 1 XXX”, and the caption must be centered above the table. Place footnotes to tables below the table body, using bracketed superscripted letters ([a], [b], [c], etc.) for footnotes.
2.4 Equations
Equations should be numbered consecutively. Use equation-editing software such as Equation Editor or Mathtype. Do not use graphs to indicate equations as these cannot be edited.  Supply the equation number, in parentheses, to the right of the equation. Define the variables and supply SI units, and list the variables individually after the equation.
3     Peer–review and editorial process
3.1 Peer reviewing
All papers will be reviewed by at least two peer reviewers. The Editors collate the reviewers’ reports and add their own comments. Final decisions on papers are made by the Executive Editor-in-Chief.
3.2 Proofs
Authors will receive proofs for checking. Proofs will be sent by email to one author only. These proofs,
clearly marked with corrections, should be returned to the Executive Editor-in-Chief with minimum delay.
3.3 Editing
Accepted papers are edited including literal modifying and English polishing in accordance with related criteria, norms and journal style, and returned to the author for approval.
4  Page Charges
To cover the printing and other related costs, there is a page charge of US$ 50 per printed page, and US$ 300 per printed color page. Upon paper acceptance, the author must pay the charge. The AAAE Secretariat shall send a notice for page charge by email to the corresponding author of each paper.
